Movers & Shakers Workshop series - 2024
Early into running Movementality in Melbourne, we realised that the professional development opportunities we were offering our in-house team had the potential to have a fantastic and far reaching impact on the wider health industry in Melbourne, if we chose to share them. So we decided to open them up beyond our own team, to provide a platform for amazing presenters to show off their skills to a diverse crowd - Pilates, Yoga, Myotherapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry… the list goes on!
These workshops are designed to foster community and connection in the industry whilst providing new perspectives and thought provoking questions about how we move and how we teach movement. They also give you a taste tester of how a certain practitioner operates, so that if you like what you see, you can go spend some time learning their ways. Overall, the common goal is for all of us to have access to current, quality information so that we can provide a better experience for our clients.
Once you purchase your ticket, accessing the workshops can be done in several ways:
book to attend at the hosts studio
live-stream the workshop whereever you are
access the recording once it’s been uploaded
All tickets are $40, or you can purchase access to the whole the series for $360

Transitioning Footwear: the when, how, and where does Pilates fit in?
Andy Bryant (Natural Podiatrist) and Rob Carruthers (Pilates Practitioner)
As we see a growing interest in moving towards minimalist footwear, how do we accurately help our clients through that transition process? Too fast, and you get the same amount of injuries but in different places; too slow, and they may not notice the change. Join Natural Podiatrist Andy Bryant, and Melbourne Pilates practitioner Rob Carruthers as they discuss how they assist their clients through what can be a tricky process. Learn exercises, timelines, and key landmarks to monitor to help your clients get the smoothest transition possible.
Calming the storm: Pilates for stress, anxiety, and the modern world
Katie Crane
We don’t have to have a long conversation with our clients to realise that excessive stress plays a role in many peoples lives. But did you know that emotional and mental stress will often be presented in the body as pain or dis-ease, and left unchecked can not only become chronic, but potentially life threatening. No we all understand that movement is key for good health, and that the Pilates principles when adhered to can bring great changes to our clients lives. But, how do we know when we should be ‘pushing someone’ or helping them relax? When do we step in and when do we need to hold space? And, are there specific exercises that we should be including in our sessions to both reduce stress and encourage self awareness? In this workshop I touch on all of this. I will discuss the physicality of stress and give you actionable practices to introduce to your clients that will make a positive impact on their stress, both in studio and at home.
The Starfish Master Class
Maggie Macgill, Melbourne
The Starfish Masterclass is based on the naval radiation movement pattern that you developed in utero. This movement pattern sets up your ability to move from your centre. When your movement is organised around and from the centre of your body, you will perform any task with greater efficiency power and ease. Over the past twenty years, I have drawn from the key principles incorporated within the Starfish Module in my work with those with debilitating pain as well as successful performers, professional sportspeople, paralympians and Olympic gold medallists.
Towering On
Carla Mullins, Brisbane based, but delivering in Sydney
This is a fun class taking advantage of the pilates tower , whether it is part of your reformer or Trapeze, Spring Board or Fuse Ladder. Carla will take you through the intelligent use of your tower for a Group class that is also able to be adjusted and tailored for specific client needs eg Osteoporosis, Balance, Pregnancy. Modifications and progressions will be discussed and explored.
Can the Pilates studio be friends with the gym? How to transition your intrinsic core work to the global gym world!
Jen Guest and Melissa Anderson, Adelaide
Many of our clients are attending Pilates as well as the gym, or are wanting to work back to a safe Gym program after injury. This workshop combines the extensive knowledge of Cross Fit training and Strength and Conditioning work of Melissa Anderson with the anatomical and pathological knowledge of Jen Guest. together, this crazy fun duo from Adelaide will work you through safely transitioning clients between the Studio and their Gym.
Developmental Movement Patterns
Ash Berry, Perth
Developmental movement patterns are the foundation for how every human on this planet moves. Could they be the key to better understanding learned movement dysfunction?
With its roots in Bartenieff Fundamentals, this workshop looks to use an understanding of developmental movement patterns and “The Basic Six” to assess movement biases and muscle imbalances in our clients’ bodies. These same movement tools will then be used in sequence, and in combination with additional Pilates mat work to reinforce these developmental movement patterns and strengthen body connectivity, which will ultimately lead to not only better physical outcomes in your clients but additionally, a more integrated sense of self.
Working with Elite Athletes
Helen Stamatakos, Sydney
Having elite athletes as clients presents a series of unique and fascinating challenges. How can you effectively prepare someone who is already in prime physical condition? How do you work within an existing training regimen which includes other disciplines and coaches? Many professional athletes have added Pilates to their athletic regimen and have found that it has taken their performance to the next level. Helen of Pilates Insync has become known for her work with elite athletes from many disciplines. In addition to the Pilates of it all, Helen will work through
• The benefits of Pilates for athletes versus the general population
• The method in all planes of movement - multi planar movements
• How to work within a team of health care professionals for ‘your’ athlete
• Compromise within training and striking the right balance
• Examples of exercises on specific equipment to address common needs of athletes and their sports

Nowhere to hide: Wunda chair edition
Nicholas Psarros and Chris Kelly of The Movement Refinery, Melbourne
Too often, we as instructors end up using the Wunda chair for three or four basic exercises as an afterthought or when more substantial apparatus isn’t available. This version of the classical chair happens to be one of the best places for creating strength and lift in the body, so let’s find the grit and sweat in the detail. We will look at the technical elements of two groups of related exercises to arouse a quality of movement and strength adaptation unique to the chair.
We hope to explore the original method with:

Mountain climber series

Reframing our role: Getting curious about pain in the studio
Alex O’Neill-King
Do you panic when a client tells you an exercise hurts? Feel like you need to throw out your whole session plan if pain is present? Think it's on you to know the answers about WHY it hurts?
What if we could reframe our role in the studio? Instead of having to know all the answers (and fix them) - what if we opened up a space to get CURIOUS about their pain? If we showed them that it was ok to investigate, go hunting for clues, and make their own decisions about what do with their body?
In this session we'll be exploring practical strategies to empower your people experiencing pain, and quieten that panic you feel!! We'll workshop language strategies including questions to ask, and helpful reframes for pain. Plus movement strategies to assist them exploring the exercises and finding achievable (yes, even challenging) options for themselves...which will ultimately mean you have to say a lot less in class!!
When: 2-4pm AWST, 15th November
Where: AOK Keep Moving, Perth
